One of tho innovations of the coining season Is the invasion of vaudeville Into the llrst-class houses. There are two ' reasons for this. The public has created a demand for vaudeville, the greatest j stars now tako occasional "dips" Into this form of amusement between seasons. whereas they used to consider it beneath i them, and the other reason Is that the cost Is much less to the producers. "It costs $30,000 to produce a musical show," said Mr. Cort. "boforo you got a tent In return. Then you have the royalty to pay all the time you are pre-Hcntlng pre-Hcntlng your attraction. Your scenery I'osts like sixty, so do the costumes and .c thousand other things. In the big vaudeville show the actors furnish the costumes and their scenery and you do not have to pay royalty, cither. Of course. ' the salary payroll will be enormous and for that reason we will have to rush in and rush right out, playing hero perhaps for a matinee and night possibly two nights. But six big stars In a. show should pack cni In for two or three performances. per-formances. "I have organized two vaudeville shows to tour the big theaters." he continued. con-tinued. "Anna Held heads one and Lillian Lil-lian Russell the other. There will be eight acts In each show. Every ono of the sixteen acts for the two shows will contain a star who has played at $2 prices. Four of the sixteen acts will bo Imported. Two of theso acts will go In uch show, leaving in each show six stars, to see whom Individually the public has paid ?2. j "Theso shows will start from the oast October 1. One will go through tho south and to the Pacific coast that way ( and tho other will come over the "north-em "north-em routf Both will play the Esilt Lake theater." Gaby Deslys Coming. The Shuberts havo arranged a big vaudeville show, much on the order of "Hanky Panky," which recently played here, around Gaby Deslys. This, too. will bo sent out over the western clr--ult and will play Salt Lake. In regard to the chain of stock thff atcrs which Mr. Cort plans In the went, he said that such a project was undor i way and that the circuit would Include Salt Lake. Los Angeles. San Francisco, Portland, Seattle and Spokane. The operation op-eration of theso six houses Jn unity will bf'gln September 1. Each fOmpany will rlay hi engagement of about six or eight weeks in each city. Th William J. ' IC.'lly organization will be one of the j six. Mr. Cort said that he had not arranged ar-ranged the personnel of the various com-' com-' 1 punles as yet, but denied the report that Maude Leone had been engaged as lcad-', lcad-', ing woman of one of them. |
