Atteaux, At-teaux, a dye manufacturer and co-defendant with President "William M. Wood of tho American Woolen company com-pany in the dynamite conspiracy trial, hired John J. Brecn, a Lawrcnco undertaker, under-taker, to "plant" explosives in buildings build-ings occupied by tho striking textile operatives, according to Breen, who testified for the stato today. Atteaux, tho witness said, gave him $500 beforo tho dynamite was placed and mado a second paj-mcnt of. $200 somo time later. Brocn, who was a mcnibor of the Lawrence Hchool committee when the dynamite wns found, was fined $500 in tuo Essox county court several months ago upon conviction of unlawfully hiding hid-ing the explosivo. The first testimony connecting either of tho defendants with the dynamito was given by John ,T. Broon, when he took tho stand this morning. Ho testified testi-fied bluntly that Atteaux had asked him if he could obtain somo dynamito. "Atteaux aald he was glad to nee I was Interested in keeping the striking clement quiet." said Breen. "The next time I saw him was on January 19. I went to report the condition condi-tion at thlnfrs to him. The conversation was about tho strike conditions. " The Pittman mentioned by tho witness Was Ernest R. Pittman, a builder with whom tho state alleges Wood, Altfaux and Collins conspired. Pittman committed commit-ted suicide on the day ho was subpoenaed to appear as a witness beforo the grand Jury, which was Investigating the alleged dynamite Plot Atteaux telephoned to Pittman. Breen continued, and an hour later Pittman arrived at Atteaux's office. of-fice. "Atteaux said. 'Excuso us, John,' and lie took Pittman Into the corridor," said the witness. "Pittman returned In about three minutes and said to me. 'Do you think you can do this business?' and I said, 'Yes, sir.' I am not sure that Atteaux At-teaux waa present at the time." Breen said that he and Collins took a train for L-awrencc, where they went to Breen's rooms. Here Collins opened the bundle and made smaller packages of tho contents. On the stand yesterday, Collins, who has turned state's evidence, gave a similar sim-ilar version of the disposition of tho rlynomlte in Broen's rooms, but denied that he knew the packages contained flynamlte. lie declared that Breen told him only that It was "Juice " |
