Show MANY DEMOCRATS 1IV RACE FCKmOB Prominent Party Men Will Go Into Today's Convention With Strong Following-. CONTEST FOR CONGRESS Johnson Seems Certain of Success as One of Nominees; Nomi-nees; Other Rivalries. On the eve of the Democratic stato convention, which opens this forenoon nt the Salt Lake theater at 11 o'clock, tho boom of .1. F. Tolton of Boaver-for tho nomination for ovenior began to reach proportions that gavo Indications that he would have prcat strength in tho convention. Air. Tolton has not been a candidate for tho placo, but ho has been frequently mentioned for tho position b3 friends. WTion the delegations from southern Utah began to arrive in Salt Lake lust night it was discovered that nil tho delegates were very much at sea as to a candidate for governor. Many fa-vorod fa-vorod T. iST. A'uylor of Provo, many wore for Wallace" or Martineau of Salt Lake, others were for Richards of 0g-den, 0g-den, and a great many were undiv cidod. There was a well-defined sentiment senti-ment for Tolton among tho southern delegates, and iu a Short timo thoy woro busily cugaged in fostering hie boom. Tho most; active candidates for governor gov-ernor are W. It. Wallace of Salt Lake, Lyman Mnrtineau of Salt Lake, Abel John Evans of Lehi, and T. N. Taylor of Provo. Taylor and Wallace appear to be leading. There is quite a sentiment senti-ment for C. U. Richards of Ogden, but he huH iot signified a willingness to be a candidate. Eace for Congress. For congress the contest appears to i be between T. D. .lohnson of Ogdon, and Will Ray and Mathonihah Thomas of Suit Lake. Johnson appears to bo ulmost certain of the first nomination, for he is the sqcoiid ehoico of both the Thomas and Ray supporters. For the other placo on tho congressional ticket the contest is decidedly interest ing. Supporters of Ray and Thomas arc working hard, and claiming much for each candidate. The delegates from outside of Salt Lake are largely divided di-vided between these two candidatos, while in this county it is difficult to determine which has the greater vote. Friends of Thomas concede Ray considerable con-siderable strength in this county, but claim for their enndidnte a largo ma-.iprity ma-.iprity of the delegates from other counties. coun-ties. Friends of Ray concedo Thomas considerable support throughout the stute but affirm that Ray has a big minority in this county. Evan R. Owen, of Wollsvillc, will probably be named by acclamation for secretary of state. Judgo Lo Grand Young of Salt Lake, is certain to bo the nomineo for the supremo bench. Thus far no candidate is opposing R D. HolHday of Grantsville for state auditor audi-tor and there appears to bo little opposition oppo-sition to J. W. Stringfellow of Salt Lake for attorney general. There is a contest for state treasurer nnd the geography of the situation will likely e a determining factor in awarding this placo. Presidential Electors. For presidential electors there appears to bo a sentiment which favors nominating nominat-ing Jesse Knight of Provo and .rud-je O. w. Powers of Salt .Lake, by acclamation. For the other two places as presidential electors, T. JT. Fitzprcrald of Salt Lako and Jamos Andrus of St. George are frequently fre-quently mentioned. The convention will bo called to order IIiIh morning by S. R. Thurman. stato Democratic chairman, -who will present Brlgham H. Roberts as temporary chairman. chair-man.
