Bveiy possible pos-sible effort is being made by Mormon officers of-ficers here to learn the details of the killing of Joshua Stevens, a Mormon settler in the Pacheco colony of Chi huahua. Only the most meager Information Informa-tion has yet been received regarding the killing. This was received by William Martensen of Juarez, who was telegraphed tele-graphed to late last night Just before the telegraph wire was cut near Guzman. He was asked to notify Stevens's brother. David Stevens, who has a ranch eight miles south of Juarez. The message was dated at Pearson and stated that Stevens waa killed by an American. But It is not known whether Stevens wns killed at his home ranch near Pacheco, a Mormon colony, or at Pearson. Prof. Guy C. WMaon, who Is In charge of affairs here for the Mormons during the abaence of Apostle A. W. Ivdns, ia making every effort to get the facts regarding re-garding the killing, in order that he may communicate them to Salt Lake, but because be-cause the telegraph line Is down he waa unable to get anything from the colonies at the time the Mormon headquarters office of-fice closed tonight. Stevens remained in Pacheco when the other colonists left preferring to remain with his family rather than to subject them to the hardships hard-ships of a trip and be forced to seek employment in El Paso when he could stay and attend to his ranch duties. Every effort was made to have htm come out, but he refused to constdor It and remained at the ranch nuar Fa- checo. Special to The Tribune. WASHINGTON, Aug 28. In a report to the war department General Stecver raises the question whether the American Ameri-can Mormons who fled from Mexico during dur-ing the acute stages of the rebellion shall be permitted to return. The war department officials ore inclined to believe be-lieve that this Is a question which should be settled by the Mexican government and that the American borde.r patrol should allow the returning refugees to take arms with them for their own protection pro-tection If they have no purpose to violate vio-late the neutrality laws by taking part In the rebellion. |
