Show FOR EARLY CLOSING. Retail Clerks of Ogden Seek to Arouse Sympathy of Public, Special to The Tribune. OGDKX. May 17. Veiled sarcasm foi the merchant who is not In favor of early closing and a plea to the public to aid them in their campaign for a uniform early closing hour were the messages printed on placards and banners carried by fully 200 retail clerks ln a big parade this evening. The male clerks marched behind a band and squad of police, while the women clerks rode in more than a score of automobiles. The line formed at the city hall immediately imme-diately after the stores closed for the night and all of the principal business streets and avenues were traversed Tho affnlr was arranged for tne purpose of calling the attention of the public to the demands of tho clerkB, who recently were formed Into an organization to secure shorter working hours. Many of the merchants mer-chants of the city are co-operating with their employees to the end that all stores close at i o'clock In the evening throughout through-out the year, with an additional hour on Saturday nights. The leading clothing dealers of the city held a meeting todav and agreed to close their stores at 6 o""clock every evening with the exception of Saturday night, when the stores will remain open until 10 o'clock. This plan will be operative until August 1, they declare, and a new system may then be substituted. |
