One of the interesting sights in the building lino is the methods used in sending up the walls of the now Empress Em-press theater at tho rear of the Hoop-er-Eldredgo block on South Main street. Log De Camp, the contracting architect, jn chargo of the construction work, believes be-lieves in using any and all systems that will contribute to the means of making mak-ing progress. Instead of the old way of hoisting brick to the workmen by the hodcarriers' route, Mr. Dc Camp has a block and tacklo systom. The crane used to lift tho steol lo place is hooked to a -whole wagon load of brick. The wagon hed is lifted oft" the wagon and sot on a scaffold near tho workmen. Extra wagon bods arc used, and after a load of brick has been deposited de-posited convenient to the brick masons, tho extra bed is placed on the wagon and the driver starts off for another load of brick. Mortar is handled in tho samo way. The -walls of the new theater 60on will bo finished. As fast as possible, insido work is started. One gang of workmen is on the heels of another. The work is a Baruplo of what can be done when all the details are planned ahead and personal supervision added. The building is being erected by day labor. Little if any will be done by contract. The walls are nearly on a level with the surrounding buildings. |
