Show THE OHURCH POLYGAMOUS. Tho Dcserct News insists upon calling call-ing polygamy a "former practice" of a portion of the membership of the Mormon church; and incidentally says that this iiortion formed but a small percentage of the total. But let us look into the matter, taking tak-ing tho first and the second items in their order. Polygamy is not a "former practice." Tt is as rampant in secret today as it ever was openly in the Mormou church. Wo submit it to the public as a fact that every one of the polygamists who entered that relation previous to- ISflO is living in tho polygamous relation today, where there has been no death to iutcrferc with that mode of conjugal existence. That is polygamy, because it is the practice of polygamy. There are hundreds of new polygnmists in tho Mormon church menning men who have taken unlawful unlaw-ful life-partners since 1S90. In fact, aud as The Tribune hnshorctoforo asserted, as-serted, if an honest count of tho two polygamous sections (now and old) were hud today, it would bo found that there arc a larger number of now polygamists Hum of old ones. It is by no means a "former practice," in any sense that it mny be considered. As to the pcrecutngo of tho Mormon people who ever have, or who do now, practice polygamy, numerically it is small. Rut it is the polygamous cult that rules the cnliro organization. Its multimntrimonial devotees hold the highest offices; thoy are in control of tho throne, tho wtake principalities and the ward provinces. Tho thing is so arranged ar-ranged that the monogamous rank and lilo of the Mormon church are unablo lo help themselves, either because they are cowered through fear or are repressed and suppressed by means of the superior office held by these devotees or polygamy. polyg-amy. . . The Mormon church is polygamisti : today, and polygamy is not a "former practice" within that organization, and polygamists control in everything Mia : the church docs. |
