Show New Deseret Gymnasium Will Be Ready for Occupancy on September 1 The new Deseret gymnasium at the L. D. S, university will be ready for occupancy oc-cupancy by September 1. Most of the work of preparing the different sections for the classes has boon completed, and during the past week workmon have been busily engaged Installing the apparatus in the gymnasium, which has cost about $11,500. The gymnasium will represent an outlay of about $250,000. and will be one of the finest institutions anywhere in tho United States. It will bo operated much on tho OTdor of the local Y. M. C. A. gymnasium, and members will be taken In all departments. When formally opened the Deseret gymnasium will bo used in tho mornings for the athletic and physical oxerclso classes of tho L. D, S. unlvfrslt, but In tho afternoons and ovonlnsjs It will be open to tho members. B. S. Hlnckloy, who haa been with the L. D. S. for eleven years, and has recently returned from a trip of investigation of the management and equipment of some of the larger gymnasiums of tho east, will be the general gen-eral secretary and will have charge of all the work of tho building. Tho atTi-letlc atTi-letlc director has not yet oeen named. He will be brought from the east, and tho announcement of this selection will be made shortly. It has beon settled, however, that Bobby Bob-by Richardson, who has been an assistant assist-ant and coach at the University of Utah for the last year, will bo an assistant at tho now gymnasium, to work with the director. Richardson is well known for his work In training basketball and other Indoor teams, and his selection will moan much for tho gymnasium at the outset. A hugo swimming pool will no one of the features of the gymnasium, and an expert swimmer will bo placed in charge of It. Tho pool is 30x60 feel, with tile floor and sides,, The floor outBlde tho pool Is also of tllo. with a slato lining around the edge to guard against slipping, slip-ping, and a brass rail all around. Abovo the pool, eight feet from tho water, Is a gallery which will be fitted for spectators specta-tors who may care to watch the swimming swim-ming or games. Six bowling aleys have been installed on the first floor and these will be completed' com-pleted' in a few days. On tho top floor of the building are wrestling, fonclng and other rooms. Whero classwork will bo done, and exhibitions will bo seen on the floor of the gymnasium. |
