Show In Republican Circles, Question of Who Will Be Named for Governor, Stirs. v SOME SUDDEN CHANGES WITHIN A FEW HOURS Democrats Look on, Laugh, and Appreciate the Kindness of Destiny. By Leased Wire to Tho Tribune. COLUMBUS, O., July 23. Tho vanguard van-guard of Ohio Republicans who will nominate a candidate for governor at the Republican convention here next week to oppose Governor Judson Harmon Har-mon at tho polls in Ohio are arriving on tho ground. Tho slate is now being framed but a vacant placo will be left opposite tho gord governor until next week. Ono of tho following men will bo chosen to lead the Republican party in the state against Governor Harmon: Judge O. Britt Brown of Dayton; Congressman Nicholas Longworth, Cincinnati: Cin-cinnati: Judge cynolds R. Kinkaid, Toledo; To-ledo; Former Secretary of tho Interior James R. Garlield: Judeo A. M. Sum mers. Judgo Kinkaid issued a statement in Toledo today in which he declared positively that ho would not be a candidate can-didate for the gubernatorial nomination. As he has been looked upon as the choice of the administration and tho choico of Colonel Theodore Roosevelt, somo of the leaders aro seriously considering con-sidering the advisabilty of placing his namo before the convention despite his personal wishes. Congressman Longworth is looked upou as a sort of last hope. His name will be sprung to break a deadlock. "Boss" Pulls for Brown. George. B. Cox, "boss" of Cincinnati Cincin-nati arrived this afternoon and immediately im-mediately commenced building fences and pulling strings in favor of his candidate, can-didate, Judgo Brown of Dayton. ' Cox is taking advantage of every possibility. Ho has called on William Kirley of the board of public works to turn over tho votes of Defianco county and tho Fifth congressional district, dis-trict, and is holding this as a club ovor Judgo Summers, to force him out of tho race. Wade Ellis, mouthpicco of the administration ad-ministration in Ohio, rushed away to Cincinnati for a series of conferences when the word came from Toledo that Judgo Kinkaid refused to make the race. Something unseen has happened in tho past twenty-four hours to put brand new complexion on Ohio stato politics. What caused Judgo Kinkaid to make- a sudden change of front can only bo guossed at. It is pretty shrowdly guessed that Kinkaid withdrew becauso he would havo to promise to support Chairman William F. Brown for re-election as chairmnn of tho stato committee. Brown is from Toledo, and Kinkaid ?s statement is taken to mean that th nomination must como to him with no strings attached to it. Tho Democrats are cuioj'ing tho situation immensely TI103' look upon tho tangled stato of Republican affairs as a good omen. |
