Show New Comer Talks About Saltair Jj Ifl Editor The Tribune: One moots with many disappointments nnd dlsllluslon-monts, dlsllluslon-monts, but one of tho worst I have en-cuntcred en-cuntcred was my first visit to Saltalr. I am a newcomer to Salt "Lake City, and having an Idle afternoon tho past week I thought I would go out and see tho Great Salt Lake. At the placo called Saltalr beach depot J found a string of curious-looking curious-looking trucks with seaUi on thorn, which I was Informed was a train and that It would start for the Salt Lake In half an hour. I climbed aboard. The seats wero most uncomfortable and I was heartily glad when at tho ond of three-quarters three-quarters of an hour we got under way. After a dismal journey we drew near to the lake, when suddenly an awful strench assailed our nostrils. By holding our breath we boro this trouble and at last we ran onto a rickety-looking platform and wo woro at Saltalr. Passing tho barrier the first thing to be sqcn right between two stairs was an engine and a number of men at work. They were spraying a number of chairs. I asked a man what they were doing that for. "Spiders," he ejaculated. Well. I started out on a tour of Inspection. J wandered aimlessly about for a time, llnd-lng llnd-lng nothing to attract my attention. Eventually I thought I would have a bath In the lake, but after having a look at the water I concluded I wouldn't. The surface of the water was covered with a dirty scum which 1 didn't foel Inclined to Investigate loo closely. A band then bogan to play, and I took n seat, but didn't on joy the performance the word "spiders" was alwaya recur- lH ring to me, and I felt uneasy all the J H time I eat there. Afterwards I thought - I would like a little refreshment and en- I MW tcrcd a place called the "Ship." It no A more resembles a ship than does Brig- Bmm ham Young's monument, but there's ono -, WMm tiling I can give the management credit H for. I found in that place tho dirtiest ' Moor I ever saw in all my life. In fact. f I may say dirt Is a predominant fca- i tu re all over, and very little effort is made to remove It. Finally, having wandered around until ; It grew dark, I made for the "train" to H return once more to civilization. If tho , outward journey was bad, tho return was a "holy terror.' I took possession 'iH of a car step and clung to a post H , ', , mmm tho way back, expecting ovory mlnuto , i H to be hurled from the steps. It was, ( i mmm a marvelous journey, truly. However, this array of crazy vehicles was eventual- SH lv dragged as far as tho "depot," Soconct , South, and with a feeling of Intense re- mmm lief I got off my perch, thankful at hav;- ' mmm lng. escaped so easily. Never again can I bo persuaded to visit Saltalr. Once is I WMm enough: onco Is too often. H I have visited Brighton and Blackpool WMm (England). Coney Island. Narragansott i rl and Atlantic City, but I have never In 'MWM all my experience encountered such dls- agreeable, Inconvenient and unpropltloxiH j ;H conditions as you Und at Saltalr. TClp- MW ling once wrote a poem entitled "Eest Mm Wo Forget." If once you pay a visit to MW Saltair you will never forget it. MW A CORDIAL CRITIC 1 MW Salt Lake City, July 23. 1 IWM if Mmm |
