Show Iij Remarkable Records Are Made j Over Course in Evening Tclc-I Tclc-I gram's Annual Races, iii ! PROTEST MADE AGAINST j THE WINNER OF TROPHY j Samuel Newhouse Asks an Iu-i Iu-i restigafion of Driving in the Feature Event. : 1 Nt-ax'ly fifty cars participated yesterday afternoon In the third annual liill climb of the Salt Lake Evcnlnjr Telegram, k which was held on the Brlsham strcot hill. A ercat crowd of people witnessed thti contest and thoroughly enjoyed the " sport. The rivalry was keen between j the different cars, and somo remarkable I time waa made, notably the record of the Vnndcrbllt cup-winning Thomas, which went over the course in :DS 2-5, This J time establishes a great record for hill climbing. The coureo was one mile long, 1 up a stoop hill nnd around a sharp curve, i The feature event of the day, the free-! free-! for-all stock car event for the beau-J1 beau-J1 tlful Newhouso trophy, was won by the j Stoddard II, of the Sharman Automobile company, driven by Frank Siefert of U Los Angeles. Tho race, however, was I protested by Samuel Newhouse, the donor of the trophy, who asks an Investigation Into the manner in which the race was driven; Siefert drovo twd cars In the I nice, the Stoddaard and the Apperson. j With the Apperson ho won in a previous ; race In tirao that was seven seconds faster than his tlmo with the Stoddard j in tho race. 1 Races Are Prompt. The day was an Ideal one for tho races i and every automobile man in the city i ; is enthusiastic over the manner In which h the races were conducted. There were j no waits. All of tho officials acted promptly, and as soon ns one car had I left tho course another was started on Its way up tho hill. The cars wero given a flying start of 1 ' one block before going over tho tape at Eleventh East street. From Eleventh I East street tho cars went up tho Brlgham street hill, around tho curve through j Federal Heights to the conclusion of the rourse. just beyond tho boundary of the ' Fort Pouglas reservation. The road was j In excellent condition and the remarkable I records made arc a testimonial to the excellence of tho street as well as to tho splendid qualities of tho competing i cart, i The best record made by a stock car ' during tho races was by the Apperson i ,Jack, with Siefert driving, which went 1 over tho courso in "1:05. This record gave j this car first place in tho event for S40D0 cars. In tho free-for-all event, tho best time mado by this car was 1:12 2-R. while tho Stoddard won tho raco In 1:0S 3-fi. The inconsistency of Slofert's driving tho Apperson in tho two events gave rise to tho protest. Mr. Nowkonse's Protost. Concerning tho speed trials for tho Ncwhouso trophy, Mr. Newhouse said last night: "I very much regret that I am compelled com-pelled to request the Evening Telegram to withhold tho awarding of the New-house New-house trophy to tho so-called winnor thereof In today's raco. When I gave the trophy I expected It to bo won by contestants on their morits. nnd If there should over bo the suspicion of unfair driving that It should bo the object of inquiry. "In my opinion such a condition has now arisen. Mr, Chceseman, owner of tho Apperson car, telephoned mo this evening, even-ing, making a claim that his car not alone was unfairly driven, but that ho had Incontrovertible ovldcnco thereof. I understand that Mayor Bransford and others in a measure confirm Mr. Cheese-man's Cheese-man's claim. As for myself, after seeing tho way tho car was handled on tho hill, I at once exclaimed against It, arfd I may say further that two hours before the raco was run, my chauffeur. Bert Small-Ing, Small-Ing, told me that he expected that the Apperson car would not win becauso of unfair driving, and ho told mo tho reasons rea-sons whs. These reasons I do not at this time caro to unfold. "I do not know Mr. Checseman and havo no interest in tho matter other than to see that any contestant may havo a fair chance when he enters for tho trophy of which I havo been the donor."
