Show MAO KEAN CLAIMS CHECKER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP Hugh MacKean, who claims thc title as the champion checker player of Utah and who Is willing to play anybody In the stato for a $100 purse and tho title, holds that the proposed checker tourney scheduled by the Y. M. C. A, cannot give away the title. MacKean say3 ho Is willing- to enter the Y. M. C. A. contest providing a purse Is offered of at least ?S0 lo the winner. L n .letter to the sporting editor of The Tribune. MacKean says- "In a recent Issue of your papor I note the. Y. M. C. A. proposes to hold a tourney tour-ney for thc checker title. I am the present bona fide holder of the title, having won It In sot matches for stakes from the two best players In the state of Utah, viz.. Messrs, H. Heusser and J. B. Smith. I am and have always been ready to defend thc title against anv-one anv-one in a match for a stake of $100 and up. Neither tho Y. M. C. A. nor any other body can give, away what they do not possess. I am, however, ready and willing to rellncmlah the title and enter and compete In any tourncv held under thc same rules and regulations as national na-tional tourneys, If the first prize of at least $50 is guaranteed by those conducting con-ducting tho said tourney.
