Show . BAD PARTY PROSCRIPTION. The news which conies from Washington, Wash-ington, that the administration is going to wago relentless war upon tho insurgent insur-gent Republicans, is certainly not good for the interests of the party. The insurgents in-surgents arc simply conforming their course to the demands of the National Republican platform of 100S. They ask nothing more, they refuse In accept anything any-thing less. When it comes to a question ques-tion of party regularity, therefore, they me on firm- ground, while the administration adminis-tration and all who opposo them' are in the morass. Tt is good party politics alwnys to smooth over differences and to adjust points of contention. Wo can scarcely imagine that there can be cause cuough in this tariff fight for such bitterness as is indicated, especially as ihc administration admin-istration and the Congressional servitors servi-tors of (he trusts nnd tho "interests" are tho ones who must be pronounced pro-nounced irregular and rebels against the party pledge, unless on tho old principle prin-ciple that the man who is most blameworthy blame-worthy always gets the maddest. Jl, was noteworthy in Ihe Senatorial debates on "the tariff (hat none of the combine Senators wore able to answer the arguments of the so-called insurgents. insur-gents. They were defeated every time they undertook to do it. And yet now. by virtue of mere brute strength and by a majority of voles driven into coherence co-herence by the lobbies of the interests involved and the logrolling combine which gave us an indefensible tariff lav., they are able to override their own party obligation, and to crack the whip over tho heads of men who desire to adhnro to what was promised, and to do what the party pledged itself to do. It is always poor' politics to have a derided break in 'the party lines; but it is politics so poor as to be ad-solutely ad-solutely and absurdly execrable to have such a breach made and enforced by those who. though a majority, are clearly clear-ly and definitely in the wrong. |
