C Tho first day of the trial of Clarence Ernst, colored, chnrgod with tho murder of Charlie Staples, un-other un-other negro, was ended this afternoon after the examination of threo witnesses, who testified regarding the poker gnmo In which the- row between Staples and Ernst started, resulting In tho former's death tho evening of May 16 last. William Wil-liam Li. Hall. William Jacltson nnd Henry Pado, all negroes, testlllcd regarding the poker game played. In Ernst's place of business, which broke up In a dispute between Joseph Giles and Clarence Staples Sta-ples ovcrk tho possession of a small amount of money. Staples. ..the witness said, was ordered from the placo by the proprietor, but later returned and- threatened Ernst's life. Later In the evening the two men mot. when Ernst fired the shot which caused the other negro's death. The case will be resumed In tho district court tomorrow morning and will probably last sovcral days. Several witnesses have been called to testify. |
