Show Dope Prom the Police Court; 1 - - 1 The afternoon session of the police court was devoted almost entirely to the Jury trial of Jinny V. Spears, charged Willi petit larceny. Attorney C. li. Dk-hl was counsel for the defense. It was nl-lefred nl-lefred lhat Spears stole a gold-filled watch, valued at 10. from the jewelry establishment estab-lishment of O. H. Knickerbocker. 113 South Main street, and lhat the defendant defend-ant afterward pawned the watch for 5:;.fi0, When placed upon the witness stand, Spears lest Hied that he hnd been given the watch by a roommatu named ' Houston, who Is now out .of the state. Various witnesses for both sides of the ease wero heard. The case was closed for both sides at about fi::io o'clock. The Jury disagreed and continued to disagree until they were dismissed by Judge Bowman, Bow-man, and tho case was continued, the date for the next trial not having been set. i Christina lloniplficisli, charged with battery upon the person of Mrs. Mary Rudy, entered a plea of not gullly. anil the case was continued, the date of trial not having been set. "Are you guilty or not guilty?" asked the judge. "Vou bet your life I am not guilty," replied Gladys. After she had reconsidered the matter, i she approached the bench and said: i "I guess I'm accused, ain't I? Well, I'll plead guilty ami I'll .stand a chance of getting off easier, won't 1?" After a sentence of K'O days was Imposed, Im-posed, she exclaimed: "If I behave myself I'll get out some quicker, won't 1?" At various times she has turned up at tho pollen station dining the earlv hours of the morning and a.sked for a bed. which has bee.n given her. She told the judge that on such occasions she had always had plenty of monev in her pocket, but could not find a place to sleep. About a week ago she was before be-fore the court on th charge of drunkenness drunken-ness and was given a floater. - James Burns, charged with petit larceny, lar-ceny, pleaded guilty ami a sentence of thirty days was imposed. |
