The long proposed and hoped-for building for tho Orphans'IIoino and Day Nursery is to become a reality, and is to be located at the comer of Twelfth Fast and Tenth South streets. Architect J. A. Jlcadluud the past week completed plans and specifications for the new building, and work on the sumo is to be commenced at once and prosecuted vigorously until its completion, comple-tion, which will tuko nutil early winter. win-ter. The structure will consist of a basement, two stones and attic. The wings, as shown in t he perspective, are not to be built at' present, but the main building as planned will be very ncsirablo and convenient, and a model children's home, with plenty of, ir and light, the outside porticos affording a very fine view of the city. The main building will be 50x"u feet. Tho basement base-ment will contain two large playrooms, one for boys and one for girls, besides storage rooms, laundry, drying rooms, etc. On the first floor will bo the larcre public reception room, tho matron's mat-ron's private reception room, her office of-fice and living rooms, and a large dining din-ing room, which will accommodate very nicely seventy to seventy-five children at the same time. On this floor will also be the bathroom for the matron, the rcrvants' rooms and their baths, an'ci large kitchen and pantries. The corridor? will be large and airy and the staircu.scs broad and in keeping with the remainder of the building. On the second floor will be four large dormitories with outside sleeping rooms and private baths for each dormitory; the nurses' rooms, halls and corridors. The attic will consist of two large dormitories, dor-mitories, bathrooms, closets, etc. The heating plant and latrines arc to be located in a sennrnto building, about twenty feet from tho main building, with the neccssaiy underground connections con-nections to the basement. The need of such a home has been imperative for several j'cars. Over twenty years ago, through tho instrumentality instru-mentality of Ifev. Mr. Puttnan of bt. Marks church, the organization was founded, two rooms, for the- reception and care of orphans, being rented at the comer of First South and Third Fast streets. These roonSs were put in charge of Mr. and Mrs. Fairclough, whose first charges were two tiny babies. ba-bies. The work grew rapidly, the necessity ne-cessity of having larger quarters be came apparent, and a group of unselfish women organized, incorporated, drew up plans and built a home on lower State street, where they themselves took up the task of caring for helpless help-less and unfortunate children. That the work has been well and faithfully done, and at the least possible expense, can be testified to by many grateful beneficiaries, as well as by the city and county officials, who havo scut their charges largely to this institution. institu-tion. With the growth of the city, however, and the large increase in population pop-ulation in count' and state, tho old quarters have become entirely inadequate inade-quate to properly carry on the good work which has. in consequence, suffered suf-fered somewhat. The association, trusting trust-ing in tho sympathy and generosity of the citizens of Salt Lake, have, planned the above building, suitable to the needs of the present, and the immediate immedi-ate future, and aro satisfied that, they wiii, by concerted action, raise the amount necessary to carrv the structure struc-ture ro completion. The main building will cost in the neighborhood of $2o,000, while the building with the two wings will necessitate an expenditure expendi-ture of $50,000. When the funds will warrant tho completion of the entire home, a hospital ward for the care of little children will be a possibility, ;iig this has been it long felt want. Tho work and responsibility of this liiohl worthy charity has rested upon the shoulders of thirteen women, act ing as a board of d'rectors. and they have given their tunc, attention and their mo-iiis for tin maintenance ai'd success of tho institution. They are trusting to the citizens of Salt Lake ami the sTiiio-lo respond generously to their request for funds, that the new builoing may be completed and equipped without delay. |
