Show COUNTERFEIT BILLS BEING CIRCULATED Secret Service Men Called to Salt Lake to Investigate the Matter. The public." is warned to bo on tho lookout for counterfeit bills, which, aro being' frooly circulated in tho city at the present time. Tho bills aro of various denominations, but mainly $5 and $10, and arc exceedingly hard to detect. de-tect. A $10 bill was offered at a local storo Sunday evening and tho clerk nearly "bit."' It so happened that it was only a .iokc, and tho fact that tho bill was counterfeit was unknown, to him until it was made evident. Tho bill had been given out by tho store a littlo earlier in tho evening. Careful examination of.thc bills will show as a general thing either tho lack of the silk threads, which tire contained in all government bills, or that two bills havo been pasted togothor. A counterfeit bill is pasted to a $1 bill in some instances, and. as the bill is presented pre-sented faco up the error is not quickl' noticed. Secret service -men are today in the city making a strenuous effort io locate tho source from which these counterfeits counter-feits aro being circulated. Thus far they havo succeeded only in securing a number of' the "bum" bills, which they have takon possession of. It is stated that thoy are not in possession of a clue which is tangiblo at tho present timo, but something is expected to develop de-velop within a few days. Tho agents of the government have been in the city several daj's. and will remain until some clue is secured which may leatl to an arrest, or at least to the location of the counterfeiting plant. Tho secret scrvico men are possessed of the idea that tho plant is located in Salt Lake City, and will endeavor to locate it, or clso provo their contentions wrong and seek the sourco elsewhere |
