Show FALLING CAGE CREATES WRECK AT. RAYMOND MINE Special to The Tribune. El'PvHKA. April 1C An accident which completely wrecked the shaft house at the Raymond mine, about one mile north of this My, will cause almost complete suspension of operations for two or three weeks. That no one was injured is considered almost a miracle. Frank Bcckstcad, the engineer in charge of the hoist, only 1 saved his life by fleeing from the building build-ing when he saw ho could do no good. The cage in the shaft became unmanageable unmanage-able and though Weeks! end tried to prevent pre-vent it from going down, it dropped with constantly Increasing momentum. Beck-stead Beck-stead ran from the shaft house and In less than a minute the cage reached tho bottom of the shaft. Tho engine was torn from its concrete moorings by the pull of the rope, and the boiler exploded, throwing material to points more than half a mile away. Five miners ai the bottom of the shaft had to climb the quarter of a mile to the surface. It took them an hour and a half. Operations at the Grand Central mine will be resumed immediately and by May 1 it Is expected that the mlno will be running with a full shift of men. Shipping Ship-ping will also begin on tho first of tho month. |
