Secretary Garfield nnd Secretary Wilson today decided de-cided on a co-operative Investigation this .summer to determine tho luture policy of the government In regard to the prohibition, pro-hibition, of grazing on streams supplying water for Irrigation. The matter nas been under consideration for neveral weeks. The officers of tho reclamation service and the Irrigated farmers want grazing prohibited, and the stockmen desire de-sire that it be unrestricted. The representatives repre-sentatives of the two departments will meet the stockmen on the ground this summer. it seems likely that limited privileges for sheep and goat grazing will be extended, provided the privilege Is en-Joyed en-Joyed under the patrol and observation of the forest officers. Tn a letter to Secretary Wilson, made public, today. Secretary Garfieid says that his observation on his trip last summer convinced him that sheep grazing ought to be restricted or excluded on lands reclaimed re-claimed by the federal government, or under the Carey ami desert land laws. In his reply. Secretary Wilson pronounced It an lnadvlsablllty now to change the reclamation for the present season. He says he Is unwilling to take any steps to Injure the sheep Industry. Tho secretary of agriculture says "Every effort possible will be made to utilize th forage crops, tho loss of which would be a loss to the whole West." |
