Show LIBERTY FOR UTAH ALSO. The great anniversary of tho Nation's Na-tion's birth aga in I The day that; patriots patri-ots revere, and that all humanitj has a right to rejoice in. U inaugurated popular freedom, and on tho foundation laid down on this dale ono hundred and thirty-one years ago, tho noblest nation of all time has grown up. Not; only is this day sacred to the cause of popular freedom in the United States, it has become known tho whole world around as tho natal day of liberty among mankind. man-kind. No people on earth arc ignorant of tho Fourth of July, and iu a hopeful way all know what the day signifies. And what, a noble, glorious Republic has grown up on that blessed foundation! founda-tion! And what a guiding flame its freedom has boeu to all peoples! Because Be-cause of American freedom there is greater freedom everywhere. Because Americans rule themselves, other peoples peo-ples want to rulo themselves. "Because it is safe to leave, public affairs in the hands of the people in tho United States, the friends of liberty overj-where overj-where argue that it is safe in their lands also to have tho pcoplo take charge of public affairs. Evon in despot-cursed Russia, the Duma is a recognized institution; no Ministry but provides for it. And while American liberty has thus broadened the horizon of all liberty-loving liberty-loving people throughout the oarth, liberty is making progress also in Utah. Beginning here with a despotism more cruel, brutal, merciless, remorseless, and oppressive than any other known in modern times, the bonds of that theocratic theo-cratic tyranny have become loosened. The autocrats of that, theocracy dedicated dedi-cated this land fo their defiant cult, which rebelled at every effort to bring it into accord with modern society, modern morality, and modern administration. adminis-tration. The rule of the priesthood was supreme, exclusive. Not only so, every ono in the organization was required re-quired to profess agreement whether he agreed or not, and to like that at which his very soul revolted. Americans who came in here, in pursuance pur-suance of their rights as citizens, wero considered intruders, "outsiders,'' and ovcry possible obstruction, menace, and often violence, was employed to drive thorn away. But. they stayed. Others came in, and now Americanism is recognized recog-nized as the leaven of the whole lump. They were deprived of their constitutional consti-tutional rights in many ways, by biased laws, and by snap judgments under those laws. They were compelled to support an alien and treasonable officialdom that 'sought their injury instead o their benefit; even going to the depths of scandalous immorality and indecency in fitting up from tho public treasury houses of prostitution and installing women in them to luro the ,f enemies ,J of the filth' regime then in power. They were taxed without representation, representa-tion, and their objection to this was hissed down with scorn. And their taxation was on a valuation unfairly assessed upon their property, as compared com-pared with like propertj' in the vicinity. vicin-ity. Their protestations against this were met with railings and abuse. These wore somo of the things which the American settlers in Utah suffered from in times past. And yet, looking back upon the history of the years, and on the oppressions and impositions which they suffered, thc3- rnay well be grateful today for the "blessing of liberty" lib-erty" guaranteed by tho Federal Constitution, Con-stitution, and now not altogether a mockery. The evils, and wrongs from which they suffered were iniJicted by a lawless combination of bigots and conscienceless, robbing priests; fanatical zealots who have been. and are now the foes of all civic order not of their choosing, and of modern civilization; and' who deprived Americans ruthlessly of their rights, and robbed them without with-out mercy. This intentional injustice to fellow-citizens of tho Republic, the uation and the people a I. large have, generously gen-erously and wisely interposed barriers to prevent, but. a ruling, law-defying, theocratic oligarch in vunmanly bud faith, breaking its pledges of submission submis-sion to law, has been incited to a virulent, and pernicious activity in defying de-fying the law, and living the life of robber barons, growing fat on the substa'nee of the people, and rolling roll-ing in riches wrested from a submissive submis-sive folk, falsely, in tho name of the Lord. This profligate, law-defying hierarchy hier-archy continues 'to howl its bitter rage against changing conditions, and airs its defiance of law and of decency from time to time before great congregations congre-gations in the tabernacle. But its efforts ef-forts to renew the robberies, tho cruelties, cruel-ties, the menaces, tho anarchies of the past; its determination to sot local law against National law, for the relief of criminnls and tho oppression of American Amer-ican citizens loyal in every thought nnd act, arc things of the past, never more to bo renewed in the bold manner of old, and in the ruthless oppressions of minorities by brute force. And so, wc say, liberty is coming even to Utah. The day of freedom, and tho aheeu of tho glory of the fathers iu penetrating oven the theocratic gloom and freedom- is sure to win. A few men here, by censing their fraudulent pretenses oB a right to rulo in the name of God, could speed that day; but as they will hold on to their power as long as thoir deluded people will sustain sus-tain them iu the cxerciso of it. the full light of freedom may come only after more travail, more suffering, nioro sacrifices, sac-rifices, But the Buffering will be gladly endured, .the sacrifices made, in order that free'doih in the effulgence of its" glory may come to ono and nil in this fair Stato of Utah, with no rulers in the name of God, but really of tho dovil, to vox. harass, oppress, mlo, and rob a submissivo, docile, nnd earnest people. |
