Henry Eckman, a Finn, while propelling propel-ling an oro car through tho tunnels of the Phoenix mine at Bingham a few minutes after 12 o'clock Tuesday night, was shot to death. John Zorol, or Zou-vich, Zou-vich, an Austrian, was arrested on suspicion sus-picion by Deputy Sheriff John Forbes, eight hours. after, and now rests In tho county jail. Eckman, who was a carman at tho mine, was working on Iho night shift. Tho murderer crept up behind him In tho darkness of tho tunnel and fired throe or four bullets Into his body before be-fore ceasing. The first leaden missile crashed through Eckman's back and passed upward Into tho stomach, indicating indi-cating that tho murderer must have been In a stooping position when he llrcd the shot. Eckman cried out, then plunged forward against his car. By the light of tho prostrate miner's lamp tho assassin approached closer una fired a second shot into Eckman's body, causing the wounded man to cry out In agony again. Three more shots were fired at Eckman by the murderer, but only ono took offect. Tho assassin then lied. Eckman's body was plorced by at least three bullets, it was said Wednesday, Wednes-day, and maybe more. In all, live shots wore fired. Inadequate Description. Max Mucohow, .a Finn minor, and others oth-ers who were near tho scone of tho shooting In tho mine, obtained an Inadequate Inade-quate description of the murderer from tho dim Ik'ht of Eckman's lamp. They suy they believe ho is an Austrian. Zo-rol, Zo-rol, who Is alleged to have had words with Eckman the day beforo tho murder, mur-der, could not bo found In his accustomed accus-tomed haunts, and suspicion foil upon him. through Information furnished by another Austrian taken Into cusLody in connection with the affray, who proved to be tho wrong man. Zorol was found throo-quarters of a mile down tho gulch and arrested. Mutterlngs from the Finns against Zorol, said to be a "bad" man, wero heard, and for fear of a lyncliing tho authorities thought best to transfer Zorol Zo-rol to the county jail here. Zorol, according ac-cording to the officers, made the boast at times thai ho had killed a man beforo be-foro ho came to Bingham and ho didn't care if he killed another. Deputy Sheriff. F. W. Donne brought Zorol to Salt Lake. There is said to bo much sentiment at Bingham against the murderer, as shown by muttering groups of men gathered together after the affair. The bullet that produced death entered en-tered the abdomen and caused a hemor-'rhage hemor-'rhage from which Eckman bled to death. The victim, who was azout 30 years old, leaves a ,wldow and a baby in Finland. Murderer Timed Attack. The murderer apparently tlinod his attack at-tack upon Eckman so that his victim should have his back to him, as Eckman had just started back into the tunnel with his empty car when the shooting began. Zorol conveniently forgot all the English Eng-lish he knew when he was Investigated at the county Jail. No weapons wero found on him, but he had plenty of lime in which lo dispose of such if he had any. A bullet extracted from Eckman's body is said to be of the same sizo as those used In a revolver that Zorol carried. car-ried. Around his waist, ncxl to the skin. Jailer Burbldku found a money belt, with a purse, that contaalncd $ In gold, 05 cenL5 In silver and a one-cent copper niece. One story of the probable cause of the killing was that Zorol's friend and Eckman had quarreled on Tuesday and Zorol took up the quarrel for his friend. Ill Feeling Existed. Telephone advices from Bingham late Wednesday gave as tho cause of the shooting the ill-feeling that existed and exists between the Austrlans and the few Finns employed in the mines. It was said that Eckman was about the only representative of his race working in the Phoenix, and the Austrlans for somo lime had been trying to have him removed, re-moved, but unsuccessfully. The feeling between the two classes of workmon-is Intensely bitter, it Is claimed. One of the bullets entered Eckman's leg. another his thigh and the third the abdomen. The bullet entering tho abdomen ab-domen could not be extracted. Assistant County Attorney David M. Haigh will conduct an investigation, maybe may-be today. |
