Show JACK-MORMON IMBECILITY. An ominont financier of Utah, visiting visit-ing in the East, is roportod to have niado the following statement to a newspaper in his old homo town in Michigan: Wo don't know who nrr Mormons in Salt Ijftko Oity in our bufinofK (lonlingK. Wo hour, in fnct, inoro about ilovnionisra and tho Mormons outside of Utah than we do inside. in-side. And n between Mormons and Grn-lilcp, Grn-lilcp, I don' I know hut Hint I would rather trust a .Mormon in money innttorf-, ns I am always nre to cot my monoy back from a Mormon, while I am not so mire nhoul the Gentiles. Inasmuch as tho Gentiles of whom the financier speaks comprise tho Jews and nil others who aro not Mormons in Utah, and inasmuch as thoso who are not Mormons aro fairly representative representa-tive of the Michigan, Iowa, Now iTork, Penns3'lvania, Massachusetts and other Stato communities from which they camo to Utah, the eminent financier (himself a supposed Gentile) appears to" havo beguu a large muckrake contract. con-tract. As a rule, tho individual Mormon is honest in his financial transactions; and that is one of the grand things of humanity. As a rule, also, tho Gentile Gen-tile in Utah, as well as tho Gentile every whero else in the United States, is honest; and that, also, is ono of the grand things of humanity. Wo havo never observed that an honest Mormon is any more honest than an honest Gontile, or that hu is any less honest than an honest Jew. Tho eminent financier must have picked out a protty bad class of Gentiles with whom to associate in Salt Lake thero arc a few, and if ho likes that kind of company com-pany he might also have picked out a bad class of Mormons. ''"But, then, what could you expect from a gentleman who first tells tho newspaper that "we do not know who are Mormons in our business dealings," and then tells the samo newspaper that ho is "always sure to get his money back from a Mormon and not so sure of a Gentile" bearing in mind that he does not know who aro Mormons and' therefore cannot know who are Gentiles? This is about what would be called a jack-Mormon proposition with all the usual characteristics of imbecility. |
