Show AFTEE THE BOOKMAKERS. Rev. Craft Tried to Get Opinion of Governor Hughes but Failed. Tribune Special Sporting Service. ALBANY. N. V.. Jan. .10, Pacing folks were much relieved wheu they ( read through the message of Gov. Hughes and found no allusion to the pastime of horseracing. They take it for granted, therefore, that Gov. Hughes is liberal and will not ally himself him-self with tho narrow-minded moralists, who for salary try to make all people conform to their ideas of what is right and proper. It is understood that tho, Washington reformer, tho Pcv. "Wilbur C. Craft, called on Gov. Hughes and tried to get from him sonic expression of opinion as to his attitude toward racing. Ho declined. He said, that he knew all about racing and its relation to the pooplc. and that it would be time to express his opinion of the matter when it came before hirn. There will, of course, be an attempt during the present session of the Legislature Legis-lature to repeal tho Percy-Gray law and make the penalty for bookinaking a felony. |
