Show A NARROW GOVERNOR. If Governor Cutler could hear what Is being said of him these days in Salt Lake, his lady-like disposition would have something of a jolt. His recent action In selecting citizens to receive official visitors, coupled with many other oth-er Bimllar things In current history, has occasioned a general nnd sardonic lnnjh. The Gentiles of Utah are not oversensitive over-sensitive concerning their lark of recognition rec-ognition by the Governor and the public pub-lic Institutions of the State. Their composure, however, arises mainly! from self respect and not from respect for the narrow bigotry of Officials Of-ficials who studiously Ignore the proprieties. pro-prieties. That all the decencies are deserted. de-serted. In appointments and consideration considera-tion shown by Mormons who hold po-lltl po-lltl cal power or who control Institutions, Institu-tions, Is as certain as that such departure de-parture from decency Is Injurious to public welfare Mr. Cutler's had taste In appointing a committee to receive the ( ongresslonal delegation Is so marked that the public mind will never excuse him; ami it may be predicted that the end which he sought to accomplish accom-plish will come to failure. Does he suppose for a moment that forty Senators Sena-tors nnd Congressmen can come to Utah and not be made aware of his fanatical folly in making up a reception recep-tion committee almost exeluslvely of Mormons and known beneficiaries of Mormon sympathy and support? In point of fact the committee should have bi n ornposed principally of Gentiles, because among the Oentlles of Salt Lake u e rnen from every State of thlc Union who have personal acquaintance with Senators nnd Representatives from thoso States, and who have intimate inti-mate friendship with the political as-BOClates as-BOClates of such Senators and Representatives, Repre-sentatives, while in the majority of Instances In-stances Mormons are not only lacking in this personal relation, but they are lacking In th1 experience, even If they have the polished manners, requisite for successful service. The Governor's narrowness, or his Subserviency to dictation from church headquarters. Is abominable, it Is also annoying to Q entiles and is provocative of contempt for himself and Is Injurious Injuri-ous to the cause which he seeks thus ignobly to serve. The annoyance to Ontiles must he understood as lacking In all feeling of personal grievance, for practically all the Gentiles of Salt Lake do not need any appointment from Governor Cutler, nor help from Mormon Mor-mon sources, to Insure their cordial reception re-ception when they call upon the Senators Sen-ators and Representatives, The annoyance an-noyance is that this State should have a Governor who cannot get w ider and higher than Mr Cutler has done In making up his reception committee. Mormons are the first to howl at their own real or fancied grievance of this character; they are the first In the Infliction of this grievance upon others. Gentiles may serve on finance committees com-mittees to raise money out of Gentiles; Gen-tiles; but when it comes to the honors and the privileges which they merit, no 'Jentlles need apply. |
