Show PANIC AMONG GIRLS. Three Hundred in a Shirt "Waist Fac-"tory Fac-"tory Frig-htened by Fire. NEW YORK, March 2S. A trifling blaze In thc shirt waist factory of Max Roth, which occupies the five upper floors of a six-story building ln Walker street, today started a panic among the 300 girls employed there. There is but one exit, besides the fire escapes, a narrow, nar-row, steep stairway. When the cry of flro was raised the girls crowded down this stairway, falling over and trampling tramp-ling upon each other, and before all were out a dozen of them fainted from fright and slight Injuries. The panlo was Increased by the conduct of somo of the men employees, who trampled on the women in their own haste to escape. es-cape. One girl's hip was fractured. On tho fifth floor a foreman tried to hold the door ln the face of the frenzied fren-zied employees on that floor, so that they should not join the crowd on the stairs. A young Italian drew a knlfo and. threatened to cut the foreman to pieces if he did not open the door. The foreman did so and tho crowd rushed through, to join tho mass already crowding- the stairways. |
