Show NAMING THE NAMES. The Deseret News has set up as a teacher of the ethics of Journalism. It speaks of the "Indecency, discourtesy and vulgarity" of designating individuals indi-viduals by name, who arc supposed to be the writers of certain matters In other Journals. If the News Is alluding to The Tribune, and there is every reason to suppose that this paper is the object of its criticism, Tho Tribuno is glad, Indeed, In-deed, to assume the responsibility of making its comments drrectly and by name. Tho News has paid The Tribune an unintentional but .an appreciated compliment. When this paper desires to express reprehension of a particular Individual through tho editorial columns, it does not shrink from the consequence of performing that duty. The Tribune makes its criticisms In the public Interest, In-terest, and does no without concealment. conceal-ment. But take the News, whether the object ob-ject of its hate be man or woman, whether Its attack be for public Or for private reasons, it used to conceal Itself, It-self, and Its editor particularly concealed con-cealed himself behind auch Indefinite designation as to give to him an opportunity oppor-tunity to crawl out, it charged with responsibility. re-sponsibility. It is only recently, that The Tribune has driven the News to speaking out plainly, and to name. the men Whom It Is attacking, Instead of' leaving Innuendo, In-nuendo, far mora grave than It Would have courage to apply directly to the Individual by name, to do Its festering work. Within recent' months the Newsv has attacked good women in this community; com-munity; jt has told Indecent lies about men; and by leaving the objects of ItB virulence unnamed It has escaped such legal and personal consequences as would have made Its editor seek a hospital or repose In Jail, if he had dared to name the persons to whom he alluded. The Tribune Is proud of the fact that If It has had anything to'-say of a man. It hao dared to mention him by name; and The Tribune is glad that It han been able to. prompt the News until that church organ has at last come out from behind its wall" of insinuation and has found enough borrowed courage lo use the names of the objects of its hate i 'even at the expense of its coming under un-der Its own charge of Indcconoy. |
