Show Wild Beasts hm Streets of Cincinnati Three Lions Escape From Cage in Menagerie mid People Flee in Terror. CINCINNATI, O., Nov, 20. In the heart of Cincinnati there was a real lion hunt yesterday In which the entire police po-lice force, re-eriforccd by such of the male population as had not fled to roof or cellar, took part. Through the busiest busi-est streets In the city to the suburbs, and into the woods beyond the chase continued. It ended late In the afternoon, after-noon, when the last of three cowed and dazed African lions was led back to Its cage In a traveling circus. Panic Roigiis Supremo. Panic reigned In the city. On the heels of the news that three wild animals ani-mals had escaped and were bounding through the city, leaving a trail of dead and maimed In their path, streets were deserted like magic, doors were locked and barred, and the upper windows of houses bristled with every description of firearms. Parents, frantic with fear, rushed to the schoolhouses to see that their children were safely locked within. with-in. Messages breathing terror poured into every police station. With revolvers revol-vers gripped in either hand white faced ipatrolmen dashed cautiously up and 'down side streets. Lions Gambol About Streets. Two of the lions, dazed and amazed at their unexpected liberty, gamboled like kittens about the streets near the circus. Revolver shots pattered about them like hall. One by one they were cornered, clubbed and stoned by circus attendants Into stupidity, and dragged back to their cage, The third and youngest made straight for the woods at Norwood. Two hundred hun-dred policemen trailed cautiously. Deep In the forest tho animal found a lair. Behind every tree around it for within a mile there was a bluecoat waiting. Finally one of the circus attendants prodded It out with a pole. A noose was waiting, and with ten men pulling at either end of a rope It was dragged back to Its cage. Only One Casualty. The only casualty of the hunt occurred at the beginning. William Johnson, an animal tamer, was hurt In trying to prevent the escape of the animals from an overturned "shifting box." |
