Show I THE FIRST THROUGH TRIP BY RAIL. Yesterday morning the first through train lo Los Angeles left this city. It comprised tho business cars of Vice-President Vice-President J. Boas Clark and of General Manager Wells. It is an olllci.il trip of. inspection and direction, by ofllccrs of the road; and it is not expected that any record time will be made, nor that there will be any special features attending at-tending it aside from the main fact, that It Is the first through trip by all rail, between the two cities. rno regular service, it is now expected, ex-pected, will be instituted in about two months, though possibly It may be' a little longer, as it is desired to have everything In perfect order, with the roadbed well settled and all the stations In full array for business before tho steady through service Is begun. Thus, cno by one the stops are taken in the final fruition of our hopes In this great enterprise. The road has been built on paper a hundred times by The Tribune in the years gone by. This preliminary building on paper is quite as essential as the actual work undertaken under-taken later; for if a first-class business proposition Is not shown in these preliminary, pre-liminary, buildings In fancy, the proposition propo-sition dies. But if, as in this case, a showing that is attractive to capital, favorable in its general outlook, and reasonably sure of a good field of Us own, can be made, and made beyond question, as was done In this case, then sooner' or later, men with "the sluff" will take it up and build the road in fact. - - That Is the common history of railroads rail-roads In the West; It is emphatically the story of this rdad. And now we have It. On the fact, as well as on the showing that brought It, The Tribune congratulates the builders, the general public and especially the communities which arc directly interested. Jt Is the consummation of a great work well done. The road will be of Immense benefit to this city, to the coast region, and to the great region that lies between. be-tween. The completion of the line comes as the meeting of the hopes and desires of a generation. It is a benefaction bene-faction which will give an Impulse to many great enterprises, and will transform trans-form the face of the country along the whole line. |
