San Francisco Today. Today Vice-President "W. H. Bancroft of tho Short Line will relinquish his temporary management of the Southern Pantile's Pacific systom and return to Salt Lako to take up his former work. General Manager E. E. Calvin of tho Navigation lines and Southern Pacific In Oregon will move to San Francisco as vlco-presldcnt and general manager of the Southern Pacific, ono of tho most Important Im-portant railroad positions In tho United States. B. A. Worthlngton, new assistant director di-rector of operations and maintenance of tho Hnrrlman lines at Chicago will go to Portland as general manager of tho Oregon Ore-gon lines, but who will succeed Mr. Worthlngton. or whether that office will bo continued. Is not at this tlmo known. On tho day following Mr. Markham's resignation The Trlbuno named Mr. Calvin Cal-vin as his successor, and two other papers had the same story, one at San Francisco and the other at Reno. He camo to the Union Pacific in 1677 as operator and agent, and since thon has proved his worth in all tho dcpartmentB. Ho mado his rise during the Gould regime on the Overland, and that management thought bo well of him that when thev left the Union Pacific to devote all their time to iho Gould lines proper, Calvin was one of tho young men sought He was found at Pocatcllo as a division superintendent, but was Immediately made general superintendent superin-tendent of the I. ,t G. N When Mr. Bancroft Ban-croft took tho Oregon Short Lino his first move was to wire Mr. Calvin to como back to the Intcrmountaln country as general gen-eral superintendent, and when the road began operations It was under the operating operat-ing direction of this official. In a few short years he was made assistant manager man-ager of the Oregon Short Line, and last year general manager of tho Oregon lines. Mr. Calvin Is a strict disciplinarian, always al-ways on hand when things arc troublesome, trouble-some, and generally knows where to look for the cause Although strict as to the rules and regulations, ho Is known far and near as the best friend an employee em-ployee could have, as long as tho employee em-ployee keeps to tho mark The men can always meet him, and It Is duo to his diplomacy that many grievances on tho Short Line havo been adjusted during tho last few years without any strikes or ono word of publicity. Mr. Calvin Is married and has an Interesting Inter-esting family. They nro well known here, and their mnny friends will be glad of this chance to offer sincere congratulations on such an Important promotion, feeling, however, that It is an advancement that Is deserved |
