Show Story of a Snowslide. "When tho Liberty Bell snowslide occurred." oc-curred." writes Dr. J. Q. Allen of Tcllu-ride, Tcllu-ride, Colo., "I was conducting a hospital for the mining companies. Receiving news of the first slide I went to tho mine, llndlng several men who were severely se-verely Injured. After attending thorn I nent them down to tho hospital. About 11 o'clock tho second slldo cumo down In the track of tho first slide, stnrtlng a llttlo to one sldt! and burying several of those in tho gulch searching for tho dead anel Injured of the llrst slide. Wo then decided to leave the locality, taking tho Injured with us. After pnsslng over thc next ridge and on coming down Into the gulch beyond, tho third slldo carno down. "This fdldo ran almost a mile. I was the last man In the procession. A heavy sr.owstorm provalled. so that wo could seo only a few feet, but ns I know we were about to cross thc old track of a slldo I kept listening. Presently 1 heard iho breaking of timbers far up the sldo of tho mountain. This could bo distinctly heard above the roar of the storm. Turing my horse, I ran him up the trail Just In time to escape the main body of tho slide. "1 was caught on Its edgo. however, carried car-ried off tho trail with my horso. and tossed, ns by a wave, on tho aide of tho mountain, where Iho slide mado a turn. Four of uk were struck by this slldo and all wcro killed but myself. In all, twenty-threo twenty-threo men were killed at this place by slides that day." |
