Show EVIDENCE OF THE FRAUD. The preservation of the Illegal ballots in tho City of Denver by photographic process will afford an object lesson to the people of that city for years. The proof that such ballots were cast, and that he owed his election to them, caused Mr. Shafroth to vacate his seat in the House of Representatives, without with-out nsklng the House to vote on the question. Ho became satisfied that he was elected by those fraudulent ballots, and, like an honest men, surrendered the fruits of tho fraud. It will be remembered that Senator Teller of Colorado was elected last year through the operation of these same frauds. The members of the Legislature Legisla-ture which returned him to the United States Senate were able' to do so because be-cause the Democratic candidates for the Legislature In Arapahoe county were elected through these same frauds. True, the crime In Senator Teller's case is one degree removed from the polls direct, di-rect, but his election w'as none the less the result of those frauds than was Mr. Shafroth's. And yet, up to date, there has been no move on Mr. Teller's part that indicates any purpose to follow. Mr. Shafroth's honorable example. Mr. Shafroth refused re-fused to keep the stolen political goods. Mr. Teller does not. The contrast between be-tween the two Is striking. That was the election, also, In which the new charter for Denver was voted down. The defeat of that charter was undoubtedly the impelling cause of the fraudp. The election of the Democratic candidates by reason of these frauds was a mere incident of the anti-charter campaign. Tho new charter would have been the death of political jobbery, and tho political Jobbers were determined to beat it. But they will not beat it the next time it is submitted. |
