Show A PRESIDENT FOR MAYOR Two or three days ago the gratifying gratify-ing news reached tho whole country that President Charles TV Eliot of Harvard university might become the citizens candidate for mayor of Cambridge Cam-bridge Mass where as even the benighted nighted do not need to be told Harvard Har-vard university Is located President Elicit Is a very able man some have considered him a great man surely all educators throughout the land regard him na the dean and sage of their whole corps He has developed Harvard Har-vard wonderful not only in the number num-ber of her students which we believe Is above four thousand but he has greatly Increased the endowment having hav-ing It Is said a better line as commercial com-mercial men would say upon the rich and generous of Boston and other parts of the country than has ever been acquired by anybody not even Dr William U Harper of Chicago university uni-versity Now Dr Eliot proposes or his friends propose for him that ho shall run for mayor of Cambridge a fine rich town of a hundred thousand people We hope that he will do so President Eliots views have not always corresponded with our own he has been unwisely ns wo believe something of a tariff reformer GO called he has taken the Stump In behalf of causes which would not bear the closest Inspection of patriotism pa-triotism and good business Judgment I can be said to his everlasting credit howovcrthaLJnthetrylng times of tho Spanish warwhich were not so very trying cither he was an avowed and persistent expansionist He has been called a mugwump ever likely to be wrong upon public questions and always likely to be unfamiliar with the I affairs of practical politics This would mako him all the more Interesting asa as-a citizens candidate for mayor I President Eliot Is nominated as we hope he will be It I Is also to be desired by all good citizens everywhere that he should gain a wide experience In the mysteries of ward politics Will the gentleman who controls the Twen tythird precinct call upon him personally per-sonally at the presidents house within the quadrangle and If EO shall he he received In the library or In the parlor par-lor What shall bo done with the aldermanic al-dermanic candidate from the Four ecnth ward who wonders whether the candidate for mayor Is totingfair In regard all the rest of the ticket What shall be done about the general headquarters head-quarters the various marching clubs of the different districts and the numerous nu-merous nlliround hustlers who are absolutely ab-solutely essential l to thc success of the campaign Thesewill be new questions ques-tions to DK Eliot but doubtless he will be quite capable of answering them to his own satisfaction Mugwump or no Mugwump we rather hope that he will be elected for Cambridge Is a long distance dis-tance away and probably be could do no harm |
