has been cast over the entire State as the people begin be-gin to realize the Immensity of last nights appalling disaster at Shlloh Baptist church Up to 10 oclock tonight the number of dead had reach 110 and ninety of these have been Identified A large majority of victims of the stampede stam-pede were residents of Birmingham and as fast as the undertake can prepare pre-pare their bodies for Inspection they are being Identified The Injured negroes ne-groes are being cared for In the various vari-ous hospitals and In private residences All will probably recover UNABLE TO HANDLE BODIES The undertakers who prepared bodies of the negroes for burial have been unable un-able to handle the victims and many ot the bodies arc still scattered over the Moors of these places Two of the undertakers un-dertakers being unable to care for the remains In their establishments have laid them out In rooms on the lloor of their stables Crowds of negroes throng the alleys leading Into the various va-rious morgues and In that portion of the city the walling of women could bo heard all day As fast as the bodies can be dressed and placed In coffins they arc moved to the homes of reln tlvcH and at least fifty funerals are expected ex-pected to bo held tomorrow PROMINENT NEGROES DEAD Theodore Price of New Orleans whose name appear In the list of the dead was most worshipful grand master mas-ter of the grand lodge of negro Mason of Louisiana and was well known throughout the United States Sarah Peyton of New Orleans whoso name also appears In the list of dead was well known as an active missionary worker Judge J H Bnllou of Baltimore the lawyer who Is said to have precipitated the panic by engaging In an Altercation with Hicks lie choir leader has been arrested and is In jail charged with disturbing publlt worship 1llcks has notrbeen located MESSAGE FROM ROOSEVELT Booker T Washington has received the following telegram from President Roosevelt In regard to tht1 disaster I am shocked and horrified by the disaster at Birmingham and desire to express my great grief at the sad loss of life In the list of dead there aro sixty five Birmingham negroes among whom are the Rev James Kelly and Dr A L Hill The majority of those from Birmingham Birm-ingham who were killed were womeiu The unidentified dead are supposed to be those of people from out of the city who came to attend the negro Baptist convention The undertaking establishments wore crowded this morning with hundreds of persons mostly delegates to the notional notion-al negro Baptist convention searching for missing friends and relatives who might have been killed in the stampede DIED IN THE WEEDS After midnight last night several bodies of persons who were crushed In the panic were found lying In the weeds In the vacant lot adjoiningthe church They had scrambled out of the mass of struggling humanity with broken limbs or crushed breasts and had crawled away in this manner to die NO WHITES KILLED Investigation shows that no white people were killed A number of white visitors were In the church at the time and several of them were hurt in the wild scramble but none will die POLICEMAN BADLY HURT Policeman EHcdgo who was standing at the exit endeavoring to quiet the crowd was caught between the moving multitude and the wall In the narrow passageway leading down to the stairs and nearly all his clothing was torn from his body His legs were also crushed but ho will recover His cC forts to quiet the crowd were utterly futile and not until he fire department I and a large number of officers arrived on the scene was anything like order restored Then It was found that practically prac-tically everybody had gotten out of the building ATTEMPT TO RESTORE ORDER Those nearest the speakers stand stand scorned to quickly realize that there was no fire and no occasion for a panic Time speaker and leaders passed outside through a door In the rear of the pulpit where held for the dead and Dr Morris made an appeeal for the families of the dead and injured A large sum was collected |
