Show CLOSE OF ART INSTITUTE Fourth Annual Exhibit Will Bo Completed Com-pleted fit Provo Tomorrow Has Been Successful Tomorrow will be tho closing day of the fourth annual exhibit of the Utah Art Institute held this year In Provo In many respects this has been the most InterotfTfng and successful exhibit yet held First of all the new gym snslum where the pictures were hung Is an ideal building for the purpose The hall is large the lighting Is exceptionally excep-tionally good and the pictures which did not attract more than panning notice no-tice before being hung there showed off to excellent advantage Another feature which called forth favorable comment was the general excellence ex-cellence of the entire exhibit the standard having been much higher thin I year than at any of the previous exhibits ex-hibits The artistic placing of the various va-rious pictures which was In charge of Messrs Taggarl Hafen and Evans elided the warmest praise of all the visitors Mr Taggnrt was the chairman chair-man of the exhibition committee and with the other two gentlemen named worked untiringly for Its success All three devoted their entire time during the week to the exhibit The medal of honor this year was awarded to John Hafcn whose work has attracted so much attention not only In XUah hut among the artists of Chicago and Boston He exhibited several beautiful paintings a group of small sketches of Eastern scenes being greatly admired To Miss Mary Tea dale was given the 300 prize The picture on which it was awarded Is entitled Maternity Blue and green were the predominant tones in this beautiful picture thc whole tending to show the effect of Japanese art on the art of Europe Miss Teasdale also won the 50 prize lss for the best water color This was a sketch of two children Lyman and book and red Mary Home reading n blue and yellow were harmoniously blended In the picture The 525 prize for the best design for n lace collar was awarded to Miss May Merrill The design was In sego lilies and was exquisitely worked out by Miss Merrill Mrs Alice Merrill Home was awarded award-ed several prizes for original designs In silk wall paper tiling and pyrog raphy Edna Wells Sloan Avon the students prize for the best study in color Several prizes are yet to be awarded and will be announced later A very Interesting feature of the exhibit hibit and one which attracted many visitors each day was the series of talks on art given by Mrs Home and Mr Taggart The average dally attendance TnrEart tendance at the exhibit during the week was from 500 to COO people 1 I |
