Show i Fit t > tJ j i t I r 0m 1 I r ti i 4 4 + r I f Y l itt it-t i Qr EJ a j a r 4 They Charged on the Fort r BRAVE DOCK An American ship containing many passengers and a very valuable cargo was bound on a long voyage Among I those on hoard was a man his wife their little boy and their dog a large Newfoundland named Dock a great favorite among the I passengers Many used to frolic with Dock but his constant con-stant companion w is his musters little boy They hud great fun together romping and rolling over each other Sometimes the little boy would be real rough In Ills play hutDock was always as gentle ns a lamb v The voyage had ban a very pleasant pleas-ant one to all and In two days they were to land It was just growing dark and Dock and his playmate wore romping as usual when suddenly the ship gave a lurch and the little boy was thrown over the aide of the vcs sfel Immediately there arose the cry A boy overboard1 A boy overboard Orders were given to lower the boat The sailors were obeying when a splash was heard It was Dock who realizing realiz-ing the danger his young matter wag In had Jumped overboard after him Everyone ran to the Hide of the ship and saw Dock swimming like a mad creature in the direction of the stern It had become so dark that he could not see distinctly but he was perceived to suddenly dive l and disappear The mother covered her face with her hands for feat she would see the dejd body of her child hosting on hc surface The sailors rowed vith all their strength in the direction the dog had taken but In their hearts they gave the child up for lost The father suddenly cried ItI heir a nplnjh Row with all your might my men It must be 1 my child The men pulled I with redoubled force and soon Dock was alongside the boat with tho child In his mouth They were lifted In and poor Dock fell exhausted ex-hausted on the bottom of the boat After this there was not a person onboard on-board that ship who did not love Dock as a child might be loved and as he well deserved JOSEPIIINB CHURCH |
