Show DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE AttorneyGeneral Griggs Submits Interesting In-teresting Report Thereon Washington Dec AttorneyGen oral Griggs today sent his annual report re-port to Congress I opens with a statement of the condition of the work of the United States Supreme court which shows that 370 appellate cases were docketed and 371 were disposed of leaving 303 cases still pending On July 1 1839 there Were 3J37 United States convicts In the various prisons nnd reformatories of the country coun-try against 2932 at the close of the last fiscal year In 007 of the 1602 civil suits terminated termi-nated during the last fiscal year Judg ments were rendered for the United States and 206 against the United States ISO were cither dismissed or 01 discontinued and 2 were appealed CRIMINAL PROSECUTIONS Or the 17033 criminal prosecutions terminated during the prosecutons year 19 were prosecutions under the customs laws In which there were 126 convlcs tions C275 under the Internal revenue laws In which there were 3719 convictions con-victions 1153 under postofilce laws in which there were 772 convictions 6 un der naturalization acts There were 4 1 discontinued and 2 entered were nolle prosae 903 under the Interstate laws in which there were C30 convictions 20G under the pension l > laws In which there were 3 i2 convictions S1SO miscel laneous prosecutions In which there were JSSO convictions AMOUNT OF JUDGMENT The aggregate amount of the Judg motiLe rendered In favor of the United States In civil suits during the last year was 5003299 and the amount ac tualiy collected on these Judgments was o27J5 while 52748 was obtained dur ing the year on Judgments rendered In former years for time United States and 27130 was otherwise realized in civil suits realzed The aggregate amount of fines for feitures and penalties Imposed during the year In criminal prosecutions was S70jl3 and the amount of these fines forfeitures and penalties collected dur ing the year was 10I0 coleltec whie 8203 was realized on fines forfeitures and penalties Imposed In former years SHOULD PROVIDE FOR APPEAL The AttorneyGeneral repeals his recommendation of last year that Con I I gross provide for an appeal on the part of the Government In cases of de I I I cisions adverse to the United States by the courts on demurrers Interposed JltclIo I I to Indictments Owing to the Increase In the price of building material the AttorneyGen I eral a > k for an increase of tho limits and an additional appropriation which 1 will enable the department to construct I I a new building for the Department of I J I I Justice of a style and finish that would woull be In i keeping with the dignity of the t Government and a dislty the na I I tional l capital I |
