Show PARLIAMENT IS OPENED Affair Was Very Formal and of Lit tlo Public Interest London Dee 3Tho opening of the Initial session of the fifteenth Parliament Parlia-ment of Queen Victoria occurred at 2 oclock this afternoon I was n formal for-mal affair and of little public Interest I A small crowd assembled to see the beefcaters who carried out the usual I search for possible conspirators in the vaults beneath the houses of Parliament Parlia-ment with the customary ceremonial I and with the customary result There was likewise the usual competition of zealous members of Parliament to be first on the scene and J C McDona Conservative member for the Rother bile division of Southwark easily secured se-cured the choice of seats arriving In the house at midnight r Although the only business before the House was the election of a Speaker the attendance of members was good In spite of the absence of the Irish members Mr Balfour the Government Govern-ment leader In the House and First Lord of the Treasury and Mr Cham berlain the Secretary of Slate for the Colonies arrived promptly at 2 oclock and were cordially welcomed by their supporters Sir William Vernon Har court and Sir Henry Campbell Ban nerman the Liberal leader In the House were similarly greeted from the I opposition benches Gera MIchiel Biddulph the gentleman I gentle-man usher of the Black Rod appeared a few minutes later and summoned the members to the upper hous to hear tho reading of the Queens communication directing the election of a Speaker There was no opposition to the wa oppositon reelection re-election of William Court Gully for a third term Congratulatory speeches followed Tuesday and Wednesdaywill be mainly devoted to swearing In members mem-bers I Thorral work of the session will begin I be-gin with the reading of the Queens speech and the debates on the reply to the throne In both houses The House of Commons adjourned until un-til 215 p m tomorrow Only a handful of persons attended the opening of the House of Lords the dusky surroundings of which however how-ever were brightened by the presence of a number of ladies The Lord Chan o cellor the Earl of Ilalsbury promptly dispatched the Black Rod to summon the Commons On their arrival the royal commission was read and the Lord Chancellor directed the Commons to return to the House and elect u Speaker When this brief ceremony was over the House of Lords suspended business |
