Show JUVENILE CRIMINALS INTERESTING SUBJECT AT FIRST METHODIST CHURCH I Prosecutor Diehl Judge Twomey I Rev Wake Miss Drew and Sevoral Others Discuss Bad Boys and Girls Juvenile Crimes and Crlrnlruls was the sjutyjocl of a paper read last oven lug by CBDlehl Pollco court prosecutor prose-cutor at a mooting held In the Sunday school rooms of the M I B church There There was avery large attendance attend-ance and the young attorney was warmly congratulated at the close on his effort Judge Lwomoy followed Mr Diehl and a very Interesting discussion was I had KLV Wake and Miss Drew unions others participating I iir Diehl does not he said believe r in the theory that crime Is inherited but that it is I a matter of environment and hence in smaller cities it ought to be stamped out Of the children that I come before Judge Tlmmouys court I 1 the boys are charged chlciiy with petit larceny gambling using abusive language I lan-guage assault and battery I I 8ult bntery and occasionally occa-sionally for violating the curfew ordi j I I nance while the charges against the girls arc confined almost exclusive to petit I lirceny and prostitution The punishment for these offenders is dUn cult to determine The city and county Jails especially the former are simply out of the question as the children aC not strong enough to withstand the contaminating influences of the older Inmates of these places Jf they are I sent to the Industrial school the term which Is not discretionary with the Judge must be until they are Il years I old which is In most cases an apparent injustice A feasible solution would be U the city to build a home for the r child lawbreakers The property stolen by boys Is mostly junk iron and brass which Is left In neglected ant and is easily obtained Many of the Junk I dealers lend encouragement to the youthful criminals by bu lng this prop erty at good pries and If the theft is discovered these same dealers too often help to shield the thieves When once started in this direction the boys make rapid progress and soon resort tu burglary porchclimbing and tlllrob lung Gambling Is conducive to theft In order to make up losses A fen commit com-mit crimes from curiosity seemingly not realizing that they are doing wronG The property stolen by girls is most either Jewelry or articles of dress something for adornment The rescue home for girls Is a worthy Institution tution but it lacks authority of law and cannot restrain Its Inmates The danger of punishment in such cases Is that it often makes criminals from merely wrong doers Judge Twomey followed Mr Diehl The boy he said is an embryo man and should be so recognized People should recognize boys whom they know on the streets as readily as they do well dressed men Parents should sec to the development of their children Children should not be expected to say r please to parents that do not say please to them The family should all be considered equals I children arc I to play cards teach them to play at homo The best way to bring children up right is for parents to go In that direction di-rection themselves an ounce of example exam-ple Is worth a ton of precept Mr Twomeys Ideas as tQ cards was not concurred In by all present and Mr Wake objected to the use of the word please In speaking to children As to this Miss Drew a teacher in the public schools said she haul overcome more Incorrlblc boys by saying please to them than by any other means and the audience by hearty applause showed their appreciation of her position tionA A number of short talks were male on proposed remedies for prolos preventing juvenile crimes and at the close a motion I mo-tion was made and carried that empowered empow-ered Rev Henry to appoint a committee commit-tee to be named later whose duty Ito It-o 1 be formulate some line of action I was announced that Hon II W Lawrence would speak to a similar meeting at the same place next Monday evening on the Initiative and Referendum Refer-endum |
