tho Gait house in this city tonight asa as-a step toward bringing about a peaceful peace-ful settlement of the disturbed political politi-cal conditions now existing After four hours of preliminary talk the conference confer-ence adjourned at 9 oclock for one I hour Up to that time very satisfactory satisfac-tory progress had been made considerIng consider-Ing the bitter estrangement of the factions fac-tions and the seemingly Irreconcilable differences in their contentions on the most Important points at Issue It soon became evident that the meeting could not deal with the question of a trans for of State olllcea or even with tho respective claims to these positions All It could hope to accomplish was the removal of sonic of the obstacles that stand in the way of securing an adjudication of these questions by some tribunal upon which the principals princi-pals can agree DEMANDS OF DEMOCRATS The Democrats at first were inclined to press their demands to the limit requiring I re-quiring the withdrawal of troops from the State buildings at Frankfort the recognition of Beckham as Governor without any further action by the Legislature Leg-Islature on the reports of the contest boards by which Goebul and Beckham were declared to have been elected after which tho main points In the controversy were to be adjudicated by due process of law Something of sen tlment moved the Democrats to make the claim for the recognition of tho I legality of the actions of the Legislature Legisla-ture since Gov Taylor Issued his proclamation pro-clamation adjourning that body to meet at London Ky They wish to establish es-tablish the title of William Goebel us Governor of Kentucky at the time of his death NO EXTREME CONCESSIONS The Republicans showed no disposition disposi-tion to make such extreme concessions They have elected to stand on the legality I le-gality of Gov Taylors proclamation though an abatement to some extent from the belligerency of the authorities authori-ties at Frankfort was reflected In hell arguments This had been expected I I I since the release of Alonzo Walker after Gov Taylors military officers had refused to recognize a writ of I habeas corpus In his case and the Intimations Inti-mations thrown out today that I the mil itary guard placed upon the State buildings at Frankfort February 2nd would not he so rigorously enforced hereafter The reestablishment of the civil authorities and the suppression of the military seemed the most prom ising ground to work upon and the ef forts of the conferees wore turned In this direction RELUCTANT TO TALK When the recess was taken at 0 oclock all the participants Were very reluctant to talk about what had been done The negotiations it was said had not progressed far enough to mako I expressions of opinion as to their probable prob-able outcome of value while a public discussion of the matters under consideration con-sideration might endanger thc success of the peacemakers That progress had been made however was freely admitted and the participants In tho conference were nil hopeful that the object of tho meeting would be at tained CENTER OF INTEREST The
