Show College Aid Bill Benefits Utah The college aid bill passed by the Senate Tuesday makes available avail-able an estimated $352,132 in federal grants for community college construction in Utah Sen. Frank E. Moss said Wednesday. The amount must be matched with $576,597 of local funds, he said. The bill defines community colleges as those under public control and supervision which offer first and second year college col-lege grade courses. Senator Moss praised the bill which, in addition to construction construc-tion grants, provides four-year college scholarships for needy and talented students, and college col-lege classroom loans. He said: "If the nation does not provide the means in the next few years to greatly expand the number of its colleges, does not immediately immedi-ately start to build more classrooms class-rooms and more laboratories and libraries, millions of superior young men and women will be denied college educations because be-cause there will not be room for them. This nation cannot afford to waste the great potential natural nat-ural resource that is its youth, and the potential leadership that colleges train." Senator Moss said that the overwhelming Senate vote, 69 for the bill to 17 against, demonstrates dem-onstrates the importance that the members of that body attach to strengthening our college system. He said that the House has also passed a college aid bill, and predicted that the differences will be worked out and a bill become law this year. Sen. Moss noted that the principal prin-cipal difference in the bills is that the Senate included scholarships scholar-ships which the House did not. He pointed out that Utah institutions in-stitutions have made good use of the federal college programs in the past. Cumulative totals to December 31, 1961, show that 14 college housing loans have been approved for Utah, for a total amount of $12,150,000. |
