Show . . PRESS COMMENT. The army of newspaper correspondents at Chicago were probably the most disgusted men at the convention, not even excepting the Tammany cohort. The absence of any facilities for preparing their reports was calculated cal-culated to curdle the milk of human kindness, kind-ness, and when to this was added the crowning crown-ing atrocity of streams of water descending upon their copy paper their cup ran over. Chicago may make an interesting exhibit by placing in scrapbooks all the press comment com-ment on the convention arrangements, it would furnish good specimens of vigorous English. San Francisco Chronicle. The straight-out democrats of Utah were recognized by the national conrvntian. It is a result upon which the territory is to be congratulated. Tne desperate effort that has been made there to mnintaiu political divisions based upon religious beliefs, ha6 been deplorable, but the progress that is being be-ing made toward natural alignments in political po-litical affairs gives promise of the complete establishment of a new order of thiugs at an early day. All the bitterness of bigotry has been manifested in the tight to keep the gentile clement together under the old flag after the dispersion of the forces of their former opponent. But the end must soon eome;"and this action of the national conven. tion, coupled with the refusal of the- republican repub-lican convention to give the Tribune faction control in republican councils, will assist the good work most materially. Butte Inter-Mountain. Inter-Mountain. The Tammany tiger may be taken back to New York serene in the assurance that he cut a big figure at Chicago. If fact if this rampant beast had been omitted there would have been no life in the gathering. It would have been as heavy and dull and ponderous as one of Cleveland's own speeches. San Francisco Chronicle. Tammany expresses great satisfaction because be-cause it knocked the, Gray boom into smithereens. smith-ereens. But it was compelled to use a Cleveland clut) to accomplish the job. Stevenson Ste-venson having been the preference of the ex-prcsident from the start. Denver A'acs. Respectfully addressed to the New York Press: At the conclusion of the presidential race Mr. Harrison will be here. Bc?eff!M?ff ovelaud will be. Omaha Wartd-TIeruM. It may be reasonably assumed that the democratic national ticket will receive the support of Tammany. There is nothing pending in state politics that offers temptation tempta-tion to any dicker, it has been demonstrated that Tammany's favorite was lamentably weak in "Chicago, and the orgenization will find plenty of motives that prompt itto pull true. Then, too, the leaders of Tammany assert that they propose to be loyal to the ticket. It may be that, iu matters political, the pledge of these gentlemen is not as valuable as a deed in escrow; at the same time, Tammany will undoubtedly vote for Cleveland this year, and everybody admits that Tammany's help is well worth having. Anaconda Saiueird. Hill emerged from the wreck with more credit than Gorruan. The latter has dropped several degrees in the public estimation. He went to Chicago as much opposed to Cleveland Cleve-land as was Hill, Watterson or Brice. But he lacked the courage to stand up. Hill made a game tight to the last ditch. Gorman Gor-man capitulated at the first onslaught of the enemy's forces. There is no doubt that had he become an avowed candidate more than the requisite one-third of the delegates would have been kept away from Cleveland and he would have failed. The country mistook Gorman for a bold and fearless fighter. It now looks upon him as weak, vacillating and timid. Pittsburg Commcreial Gazette, |
