Show 1 Gambling for Dible. Loxdo.v, June 27. In accordance with a custom dating from the year 1.S25 the unusual un-usual spectacle was recently witnessed iu the parish church of St. Ives, of a raffle for bibles. Twelve children threw dice and the six lucky ones were awarded the bibles. The origin of the custom is in the will of Dr. Wilde, who in tho year mentioned, left a fund for the purchase of six bibles yearly. The proceedings were conducted by the vicar, assisted by a curate and two church wardens. |
