Show WILL WHITNEY 1SK CHAIRMAN? Discussion as to Who Will T.eal the Cleveland Cleve-land Forces. Philadelphia, June --'8. The announcement announce-ment from Washington that ex-secretary W. C. Whitney ie Cleveland's choice for chairman of the new national committee causes considerable surprise among local democrats, especially those who were delegates dele-gates to the Chicago convention, as there had been a general impression that W. F. Ilarrity of this city, would be chosen for ' that important position, and that the man-j man-j agement of the democratic end of the com-j com-j ing campaign would be directed from the Quaker city. In fact, at Chicago last week, Mr. Harrity's selection was regarded as a foregone conclusion. He was the unanimous unani-mous choice of a number of members of the new committee who were interviewed, while several of the Cleveland leaders expressed the opinion that no better selection could be made. Some time between Cleveland's nomination nomina-tion at 4 o'elock in the morning and the afternoon or final session of the convention, however, something occurred some say that it was advices from Cleveland himself to induce these same leaders to be less enthusiastic regarding the choice of the Peunsylvanian, and hence the adoption in 1 the closing moments of the convention of the resolution authorizing and empowering the national committee to select asits chairman, chair-man, and as the chairman of its executive committee, persons who are not members of the national committee. Should Mr. Whitney be the next chairman chair-man he will be. regard d as the personal mouthpiece of Grover Cleveland, and the latter will be to all intents aud purposes the actual manager of his own campaign. Ilarrity Ilar-rity is a born organizer and compaitrner, anil the possibility that he may be pushed to one side is not regarded with particular favor in local democratic circles. |
