Show . WAS HE ALIVE? Washington Irving Bishop Shouted for "Help" During the Autopsy. New York, June 2S. The case of Drs. Frank Ferguson, John Arthur Irwin and Irwin Hanse, who are under indictment on the charge of holding an illegal dissection upon the body of Mind Reader Washington Irving Bishop, is on the trial calender of the court of general sessions today. Bishop died suddenly at the Lanbs club on the morning of May 13, 18S'., just after he had given an exhibition of mind reading. Early next morning the three doctors named made an autopsy w ithout permission of the coroner, or of Bishop's mother, his nearest living relative. 1 His skull was opened, and it was found that his brain weighed forty ounces, aud was badly congested. A certificate was given that death was due to hystcro-cata-lepsy. The mother of the mind reader, after vainly endeavoring to procure the indictment indict-ment of the doctors for murder was successful success-ful in procuring the present indictment. She claims that her son was in a cataleptic trance, and will produre witnesses who will testify that they heard Bishop cry out 'Help" as the surgeon's saw entered his brain. The defense is that the unfortunate man was dead beyond question when the autopy was made. |
