Show IT IS CHASE. Ho Receives the Nomination for Governor on the First Kallot. Fort Wayne, Ind., June 38. The repub-lii repub-lii ans of this state are in session here this afternoon for the purpose of putting a state ticket in the field to be voted on next November. No-vember. Some two mouths ago the date of the gathering was changed from today to Thursday last in order to accommodate the farmers in the southern part of the state, but subsequently the date was changed back again. This, however, did not become generally gen-erally known, and as a result, quite a number num-ber of delegates and visitors put in an appearance ap-pearance last week, only to learn that the gathering would not assemble until today Governor Chase seems to be the strongest candidate for the gubernatorial nomination, but he has numerous opponents, aud it will be a free-for-all scramble for the entire ticket. JThd opposition to Chase tried to delay the organization, claiming that a large number of delegates were present who could not be .-eat. .1. birt Chairman Gowdy claimed that organization was the first thing in order and announced Hon. C. W. Fairbanks as temporary tem-porary chairman. On taking the chair Fair-banks Fair-banks delivered a telling speech dealing w ith protection and reciprocity and a united party in Indiana. A recess was then taken till 1 p. m. On re-assembling the platform was adopted. The platform endorses the Minneapolis platform, eulogizes Harrison's administration, administra-tion, commends the ticket, denouuees the democratic party of the stale for the gerrymander gerry-mander of congressional aud legislative districts dis-tricts and for running the sate into debt and unnecessarily increasing taxation, and for partisan, cruel and tncompctent management man-agement of national matters. The platform is in favor of the repeal of the 10 per cent -tax on state bank issues, which, if carried out, would remove the only barrier against "wild cat" money; fav-ors the law compelling compell-ing the use of safety car couplers on all railroads; endorses the pension legislation of congress ; recommends the establishment of a state's soldiers' home in connection with the state where all ex-soldiers, their wives and widows can be eared for, to the end that the veterans and their wives need not be separated in their declining years. The platform also pays tribute to the memory mem-ory of the late Alvin P. Hovey, and extends ex-tends sympathy to Blaine aud family in their recent bereavement. Governor Chase was then put in nomination nomina-tion for governor and several seconding speeches were made.. He was nominated .n the first ballot and Theodore Shockly for lieutenant-governor. |
