The principal time of the city council coun-cil last night was devoted to considering consider-ing the application for a liquor license for a saloon in the Franklin avenue theater building. Councilman Kail vigorously opposed it, stating that the stalls were lilted up with electric bells ready for the sale of liquors inside of the theater. He said ho had voted for the theater liccse, believing be-lieving that lleynolds it Co. were honorable hon-orable men. Mayor Scott claimed the license to conduct a theater had been obtained through misrepresentation. Mr. James thought tho city needed solid enterprises more than variety theaters. City Attorney Merritt was of the opinion that the council could deny a new license. Tho vote on the license stood a tie; yeas Pembroke, l'ickard, Cohn, Anderson, An-derson, Karrick, Lyun, Noble 7. Nays Parsons. Pendleton, Hall, James. Heath, Wolstenholmo, Spaf-ford-7. Mayer Scott cast the deciding vote against a license, thus defeating it. Mayor Scott reported that the char- j ges against Police ( )llicers Merrill, (iatis and Lane were sustained, and that Marshal Young had asked for their resignations, res-ignations, which had been - complied with. The report was adopted. Mayor Scott appointed J. S. MeXair, A.N. Randolph and Charles Sohelling to till the vacancies, which report wus 1 referred to the police committee. |
