A Illlndlng Snowntorm Promises to Quiet Down the ISodn. 1 Omaha, Dec. 31. A special from Kushville says a blinding snowstorm, which is fast assuming tho proportions of a blizzard, has been raging there and at the agency since 9 o'clock this morn-ing. Advises nre that the desultory fight was kept up nearly all night at the battle ground with-in a few miles of the agency, until, by reason of tho suspicious ac-tions of tho alleged friendly Indians in the camp near the agency, the troops were to be called in from tbe field. Tiie r)Uestion on every hand is, What has become of the supposedly laree number of friendly bucks located south of the agency until yesterday ? A half-bree-courier who was through that camp last night reports that nearly every ablebodied Indian in this outfit had quietly slipped away after dusk and joined the hostile forces. The friendly Indians at Pine Kidge now ho says are principally squaws and those not able to light. Up to 11 o'clock this morning, however, every-thing was reported as quiet, both sides resting on their arms and each await-ing some move from opposing forces. That further desperate lighting will occur there seems to be no doubt. If the Indians should make an onslaught during this storm they would undoubt-edly have a great advantage, as they are in their element at such a timo. The danger is that the Indians will now break away 10 their strongholds in the Bad Lands and will be reinforced by the Rosebud. Standing Rock and oilier Indians. Eight more dead sol-diers were brought to the agency after dark last nigh! being part of yester-day's fatalilie The losses t Indians is known to have beengi'e it the definite number has not as ye ascertained. The semi-annu- report of Secretary Pollock for the first six months' busi-ness of the Stock Exchange indicates the aggregate business to have reached a much higher figure than could have been reasonably expected of an that was in its experimental stages. The record shown for six months is very flattering and considering that the first months were during the heat of summer, and that during the last two months there was a money panic which prostrated the business of the leading mining exchanges of the country, the showing is remarkably good. Day before yesterday I met a man who is probably the only bona lido snake charmer in America. Ho has been in town seeing about placing his fall snake crop. It seems very odd to hoar him talk of "my crop of snakes" but he , means every word of it. for he has a genuine snake farm in the Southwest. The farm proper consists of a pen some twenty-liv- e feet in diameter. In the center of this pen is a raised plat-form, accessible in safety from the out-side, ou which visitors can promenade out of reach of the deadly fanga. In the woods and wild swamps sur-rounding the place legions of moccasins, cottotimouths, raltlesmakes and copper-haad- s are found. . These wilds are the seed bins from which at times Mr. Child draws to replenish his farm. At one side of the eiosnre is a rabbit warren in which live gome fifty or sixty bunnies. Their number, however, is conslantly changing. They never die of old age. They aro the food of the snakes. Between 500 and (JOO reptiles are in (he farm at present, and most of them nre intended for this faH'sslaugliter. Only the larger ones are used, as they yield a greater amount of oil, skin and 'rattles than the small ones. Mr. Childs ex-pects to harvest ti.H) ounces of oil this season, aud has made his price $2 per ounce. Aside from thu oil, he will have a handsome crop of ratiles and tanned skins. When an ounces or so of fresh oil is desired. Mr. Childs enters the pen and either whistles with his lips or uses a II lite. The snakes at once glide out of their holes aud gather round him, mak-ing a peouliar parring sound with their rattles to denote their pleasure. Se-lecting the largest and fattest," Childs Eicks it up knife., and cuts its head off with . t ' . . . LITERARY LIGHTS.
