Show Tins winter has been ono of un- paralleled severity in the eastern tatea of which Chicago is the centre. On several occasions tho thermometer has ranged below zero, and the combined com-bined snow and wind storms which .. acquire a fearfid sweep over the lakes severity, lco anl snow have held the country in their chains, until the water courses aro froze u up solidly and thero is a great scarcity of water for domestic purposes and for stock. Contrast with this picture the present winter in Salt Lake valley, where tho thermometer has not yet touched zero and on a majority of the days water has run freely and plentifully through the streets, the wejtther par- Uking of the climate of spring rather than winter. But of course one can1 not enjoy cvory thing. The pure moral atmosphere of Chicago and the high tone of ita people are full compensation com-pensation for its internal climate. HEW MEXICO AHD COLORADO. The senate caucus on Thursday agreed by a largo majority to tho house bill passed last session for tho admission of Colorado as a state. Tho dispatch containing this news, expresses ex-presses the believe that the house bill for the admission of Now Mexico will also be agreed to. This action is aim-ply aim-ply political, and id governed by the same motives which have led this congress to pass other measures of a partisan character, for the purpose of strengthening the republican party, and bolstering it up for future use. Colorado and .Newl.Mcxico, it is expected, ex-pected, will each return republican senators, which would make a very desirable acquisition at tho present time, when the administration majority ma-jority in the senate is so rapidly failing oft. But it is very doubtful whether the people ot Colorado can be depended de-pended upon to carry out this programme, unless by some previous arrangement among the politicians. In regard to New Mexico it is more difficult to predict anything. The Indians and greasers of that territory may probably be manipulated by tho ring officials into carrying out a cut and dried programme. The leading eastern presses ridicule tho idea of the admission of such sparsely settled states to offset in tho senate the votes of New York, Pennsylvania, and other states with thi-ir millions of voters; bat party necessities are om- nipotent and have little regard to f justice or the fitnea of things. The c republican party admitted Neveda and Nebraska to strengthen its vote in Congress, and Colorado and New Mexico will come in fer the same purpose. Trobably Utah has nearly as large a white population as both n of these territories combined; but Utah stands no chance of having her rights of self government recognized re-cognized under this congress. Perhaps however the democratic party will want another state by and bv, and its needs may become our opportunity. Tho admission of Colorado aud New Mexico will increase in-crease the power and influence of the great empire of the west, and enable it to lecure aotue attention to its interests in-terests in the halls of congress. In connection with tho southern states west of the Mississippi, who are our :' natural allies, the Pacific and Kocky j Mountain states will a growing power at Washington. 'l i l PMNfi j n- |
