Show A RIGHTEOUS DECISION. The commissioner of the land office having been requested to construe the act of June, 1S74, fer the relief ol settlera on railroad lands so as to permit per-mit the Union Pacific railroad to select lands containing coal and iron, in lieu of agricultural lands proposed to be released in favor of actual Bet-tiers, Bet-tiers, the commissioner replies that tho act of June lust provides that nothing therein contained Bhall in any manner be so construed sb to enlarge en-large or extend any grant to any such railroad. " Your company received all its coal and iron lands without diminution dim-inution on account of the claim of any settler. To allow you in addition to surrender lands purely agricultural and take the rcserveu coal lands of greatly increased value, would in my judgment materially enlarge your yraut, and would therefore be an ex-, press violation of tho act under which the daini is presented." |
