Show I GRAIN AND PROVISIONS K Reports of Crop Damage Sent Wheat 7 Prices Prces Higher Chicago June 29 Wheat started strong on the wholly unexpected advance at Liverpool Crop amage reports continued con-tinued to our in although the weather was fairly favorable A good deal of the complaint was based on the assertion that owing to the excess of moisture the straw had been abnormally developed but the heads had been poorly filled so that the yiejd was extremely disappointing disappoint-ing The scattered threshing returns which came from the fields seemed to confirm this view of the situation The result was that shorts began to show a Y d ° I good deal of concern and started to cover the demand giving an upward turn to prices The market remained firm but without much animation until after the middle of the session when the firmness was changed into exceeding strength The crop damage reports were too persistent and general to be doubted any longer and the covering of short wheat which had in the forenoon been conducted with much care and unobstructiveness became too universal for the business to retain its early undemonstrative character An hour from the close trading became heavy and somewhat excited odd excied nt moments mo-ments and the price rose rapidly and materially September reacning 60c again a-gain of 2 and July advanced 26 selling at 7 After this improvement there was enough selling of long stuff and sell ing for short account to cause a slight reaction Liverpool 2d higher for July and 94d for later deliveries At the close Liverpool was ld up or 1d lower than at the opening and later deliveries were about as they had opened At the close July was 1 higher and September 2c higher than yesterday Good buying by shorts In July and prominent longs in September together with the strength in wheat advanced corn July closed 7Mlc higher Covering by shorts unfavorable weather forecasts and the rally in wheat and corn were the reasons for the strength In oats July closed with a gain of 1 Lower prices at the yards and large hog receipts started provisions rather easy The decline was all recovered near the dose with the rally in the coarse grains Pork left off unchanged lard 2c lower and ribs 2c higher The leading futures ranged as follows WHEAT Ko 2 I I Open 1 High LLow I I Close June t 7014 79l 79 79l July 71g71 g 714 73t Jul Sept < G6fiGG 71 66 6 Dec Wool and Cotton Reporter will say tomorrow of the wool market The wool market mar-ket has progressed at a lively pace Some fair sales sf Australian and pulled wools have been made but otherwise sales have been light A great many mills are running on short time and more expect to be doing s very shortly short-ly Some are shut down altogether or are running no more than is necessary i neces-sary to turn out their light weight samples I sam-ples Consequentiy the wool trade does I not anticipate an immediate improvement improve-ment in the demand for raw material Reports regarding the western situation situa-tion are conflicting but it looks as if matters had begun to quiet down somewhat some-what Taking both the inactivity of what bot thE inrctvly the mills and the excessive nnnness or the growers Into account the outlook for the wool dealers is not quite s clear as they might wish The trade are practically unanimous In believing that wool will eventually go to much higher prices but they are for from agreed that this end will be reached in the immediate future Prices are as well maintained as they have been for weeks Sales of wool in Boston amounted to 854000 pounds domestic and 407500 pounds foreign against a total of 753 500 for the previous week and a total of 73So000 for the corresponding week last year Sales since Jan 1 1S9S amounted to 594505318 pounds against 178572600 pounds last year at this time J 4 |
